About Bursa

Bursa, in northwestern Turkey is the 4th most populous city in Turkey, with a population of nearly 2,7 million and is one of the most modern, developed metropolitan centers in the country. Bursa was the capital of the Ottoman State between 1326 and 1365. At that time it was referred to as "Hüdavendigar" (meaning "God's Gift"), while a more recent name has been "Yeşil Bursa" (meaning "Green Bursa") in reference to the parks and gardens of the city, the fertile agricultural plain and the rich variety of flora and woodland in the surrounding region. The city of Bursa, just beyond the southeastern shore of the Sea of Marmara, lies on the lower slopes of Mount Uludag. Bursa is synonymous with Mount Uludağ which rises majestically to the south. The largest ski resort of Turkey, which is currently undergoing further development, is within an hour’s reach of the city centre. Many significant buildings remain from the era when Bursa was the first Ottoman capital. Mausoleums, mosques and the covered bazaars of the Ottoman period constitute the city's main landmarks. The Green Tomb (Yesil Turbe) complex includes a mosque, an islamic school, a tomb and an alms kitchen. The mosque is a fine example of early Ottoman architecture and the former school (medrese) is today a museum of Turkish and Islamic arts. Also in the city centre is the Great Mosque of Bursa (Ulucami ), another excellent example of an early Ottoman congregational mosque, featuring superb calligraphy and tilework. There are also several fascinating museums, from sectors as varied as automotive to forestry, with a particularly rich museum of archaeology. The health-giving natural thermal springs, the surrounding fertile plain and an orderly urban growth programme complete the picture of Bursa. Local legends include Karagöz and Hacivat shadowplay characters, who lived and are buried in Bursa. Some of the most famous Turkish culinary specialities originate from Bursa, including Iskender kebab, marron glaces, peaches and Turkish delight (lokum). Bursa is home to Uludağ University and the student population attains one of the highest overall levels of education in Turkey. Within the environments of Bursa, the towns of Iznik(ancient Nicea), Mudanya and Zeytinbağı are especially notable for their long history and important monuments.
